Week 18

 

Midweek Greetings Families!

 

Welcome to the last six weeks of Classical Conversations.  I am so excited about all of the fun activities and festivities we have planned for the next quarter.  Planes, bridges, the orchestra, contests, picnics, and more!

 

Remember to have your children to sit with their tutor when they come in for morning assembly next week as we implement our new schedule for the orchestra weeks. 

 

Brooke, Anna, and Grace-- we missed you girls!  Hope to see you next week.  :)

 

History:  (United Nations.)  In 1945 (march in place) after the League of Nations failed to prevent WWII (ASL W, W, 2), American President Roosevelt (salute), British Prime Minister Churchill (pretend to put a hat on your head and make a "bulldog" face) and USSR Premier Stalin (put index finger under nose like a mustache) formed the United Nations.

English:  Five Kinds of Nouns. 

 

 

 

*Correction for last week's English, week 17:  It was brought to my attention that saying the definition of a noun the way we learned in class would be considered incorrect if said that way for memory master since we added words to our song.   There are several songs on CC Connected (select Cycle 2, week 17, English grammar) that are acceptable. 

 

 

 Science:  Newton's Third Law of Motion.  Kinetic chant:  (Sitting, pat-pat-patting on legs) Newton's Third Law of Motion, Newton's Third Law of Motion... For every ACTION (stand up) there is an EQUAL AND OPPOSITE (repeat twice and hold hands parallel in front like an equal sign, with left hand on top and then switch so that you have your right hand on top) REACTION (sit down and quickly clap three times-- hoping the clapping three times will help everyone to think "third" law.)   

 

 

Math:  "Area of a Triangle" (to the tune of "Particle Man" by They Might Be Giants)

 

 

 

 

Latin:  Repeat.  Future Tense:  Bo/bis/bit bimus/bitis/bunt  (See last week's NG)

 

Geography:  (More) Central Europe.

 

 

Some tips for this week:  Austria is where the Carpathian mountains take a little "dip."  Hungary is Austria's neighbor to the right and Czechoslovakia (former) is above Austria and Hungary, divided by the Carpathians (though now it is the Czech Republic and Slovakia.)

 

Presentations:

 

I loved, loved, loved everyone's presentations this week.  Jacob did an incredibly concise and thorough job explaining the game of Chess in under four minutes, which is not an easy task!  Sammy wowed the class by teaching us how to make a duck call out of a straw (which we just had to try out as soon as we got home yesterday-- and it worked!)  Thanks Sammy!  Ella Rose captivated her audience with a delightful surprise ending after teaching us how to properly dress for a 19th century formal event.  Halley did a great job improvising after accidentally leaving her planned presentation at home, and Daniel entertained and informed with a balloon demonstration.  What a talented group we have!  I believe our special guest, Cindy McAllister, was very impressed. 

 

Presentation Topic for Week 19:  Biography and Famous Speech.  Introduce a famous person for the first minute or so, and then recite all or a portion of that person's famous speech.  I can't wait to see what you guys come up with next!
